Technique Tuesday: Glittered Pretties

Technique Tuesday: Glittering Pretties

Well I was planning on showing this technique last month, however our plans to go camping midweek through that idea all to heck. So, this is the best of both worlds! This month I will feature glitter, and to start I'll work with the Pretties!

Glittered flowers are all the rage right now, but sometimes you just can't find them in the colours you need, or maybe you don't need to buy 20+ in the same colour. I think I have a solution!

  Here's what you need:

Pretties kit

Crystal Effects

Marker

Glitter ( I chose the Light Blue glitter from the Cosmos Glitter set)

. First you want to colour your flower. I love the marker technique, you get quick, even colour coverage, and it dries in seconds.

It's important that you do colour your flower, in the event your glitter coverage is not perfectly even, gaps won't show as much if it's coloured.

On a scrap piece of paper, puddle some Crystal Effects.

You will need a fair bit, depending on the size of your flower. Better to have too much, than to have to stop in mid process to add more Crystal Effects. It dries very quickly on the flowers.

Using your finger (you can try a paint brush, but I found my finger to be much more capable with better control), "paint" the flower as evenly as you can with the Crystal Effects.

As quickly as possible, pour the glitter over the flower.

Allow to set for a few seconds, then lightly shake off the excess glitter.

Set aside to dry...it only takes a minute or two.

Here is the finished product. I used last week's SCS Sketch Challenge # 178. The card base is Almost Amethyst, an the three panels are Almost Amethyst Prints Designer Paper layered on Whisper White. The sentiment is from an old retired set called "Sage Advice". I'm a sentiment junkie, so I think I will always hang on to this one.

The colour of the glittered flower is a little off...no doubt to the sparkly light reflecting effect! It's a fabulous match in real life. I thought of adding some more detail to it, but I really wanted to get this up tonight. A Technique Tuesday on a Tuesday...that's an oddity in itself!

I know you probably think I've been slacking, but honestly I have been stamping. My mojo has been flowing, and I really had to make myself stop just to take the pictures I was so in the zone! Of course I can't share them all right now, but I think I have enough to keep me blogging for a few days!

SUO Featured Stamper SusieStampsalot

It is so fun to stamp a challenge again!  I had all this new stuff, and I hadn't made time to play with it yet.  So when I saw Susan Liles, AKA SusieStampsAlot, a fellow Verve Diva, was the Featured Stamper yesterday, I decided I had shown enough reserve, and broke into my new stamps! 

Susan has an amazing gallery, and it took me quite a while to choose just one card, but I finally decided on this one!  I already knew I wanted to use my new Dreams du Jour stamp set, and my Bella Rose paper, and whadya know...I got to use my new scallop border punch too!  As per the rules of the challenge, I kept the layout the same and changed the colours and stamps.

I started with 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" base of Riding Hood Red.  I used the floral print from Bella Rose, along with it's alternate side the Kiwi Kiss polka dots, along with the gingham print (scalloped with the border punch!).  I lined the papers up as Susan did on her layout, and I tied a length of Old Olive poly twill ribbon around it with a wisp of pink gingham at the knot.

I stamped the focal image in Versafine Onyx Black on whisper white and coloured it in with re-inkers and aqua painter.  The corners were punched with the ticket corner punch and adhered it to Pirouette Pink and Riding Hood Red. The Pretties along the bottom were died with an old blender pen and reinkers, and secured with crystal circle brads from the Pretties kit.  The only non-SU items were the gems in the corner, because the stems of the brads were so long I couldn't get them to work in the corners.  The focal piece is adhered with dimensionals, and the card was done!

I'm quite happy with the way it turned out, and I will send this off to Susan to celebrate her being selected as Featured Stamper!

Technique Tuesday; Strung Pearls

The first time I saw the Pretties done like this was on Caroline Lebel's blog here.  That was almost a year ago, but it struck me as so pretty, I knew I would case it one day..and today's the day!

  To create this, you need:

Pretties Kit

Jumbo eyelet (1)

Cord (I'm using the old retired SU silver cord)

and not pictured:

Cropodile

Scotch tape

I started by adhering a small piece of Riding Hood Red to the Whisper White. 

The allows the pearls to stand out better and also gives it support since Whisper White is the lightest cardstock.

Then I punched a hole near the top with the Crop-o-dile.

Next, you will set the eyelet through both layers.

Now you are ready to string the pearls.

Start by cutting about 5" of cord (longer if your card is vertically oriented.  I did 2 strings...you can do as many as you like.

Tie a knot in the bottom of your string to prevent the pearls from sliding off.

String your pearls in whatever fashion you like.

Both strings can be different or they can be the same.

Thread the cord through the eyelet.

Secure to the back of the cardstock with scotch tape.

Here is the finished project.  I had envisioned this card before I had the stamp set, and then wouldn't you know it...when my order finally shipped the stamp set was on backorder!  It was worth the wait though, the card came together really quickly...even with staging and photographing the tutorial!

My "Fresh Cuts" set arrived the same day as my new preview order, so I couldn't resist putting them together.  I worked with Riding Hood Red.  The Pretties flower was coloured using the reinker and an old blender pen.  (See the tutorial here).  I layered a white flower then a Riding Hood Red button to finish.  The entire Whisper White layer is attached to the Riding Hood Red base with dimensionals....and that's about it!

Technique Tuesday; Hatpin Heart

When I first got my Pretties kit, I was all over the flowers, but the hatpins really through me.  Honestly, I had never seen them before, so it wasn't until some cards started showing up on Splitcoast Stampers that I really saw what you could do with them.  They are still not the first thing I reach for, but I wanted to share a fun idea as well as some basic hat pin how to's!

To create this simple, although I will admit, a little finicky, hatpin technique, you will need:

Pretties kit

Heart Stamp along with ink and markers to colour it

Ribbon...yes I am using retired ribbon, but when you do it, you can pick colours that have current ribbon!

You will begin by threading the beads on to the hat pin.

I start with a larger bead, then a spacer, then a smaller bead.

You only want to place the top half of your beads on at this point.

Now, you want to insert the half beaded hatpin through the ribbon, with about 1/2" between the in and out points.

Your ribbon should be long enough to wrap around your heart...or what ever image you chose to work with.

You could thread it through the heart without the ribbon, but I found the paper buckled too much for my tastes. 

When you have threaded it through, you can add the last half of the beads. 

When you fill it up with beads, the hatpin will not move on the ribbon.

Place the hatpin cover on the end, which covers the pointed portion and keeps the beads from falling off

Apply adhesive diagonally across the back of the heart.

Then you will attach the ends of the ribbon.

When you are done it will look like this.

The heart stamp is from "Just Celebrate" which was featured in the Occasions Mini, and it just happens to be my favorite heart stamp.  Here's the finished card.

I stamped the heart in black and coloured it in with Rose Red and Regal Rose Markers.  The key to colouring with markers is to colour in a circular motion, and really get the paper wet with the ink, which helps it blend and not show lines.

The heart was mounted on a 2" square of Whisper White with dimensionals, then layered on Rose Red and Regal Rose.

The card base is Whisper White, and the designer paper is the Prints series in Rose Red.  I wrapped some Rose Red ribbon from the Fairy Tale ribbon originals set around it and snipped in flag fashion.  Now before I get feedback on the fact that this will not fit in an envelope with the ribbon like that, let me assure you, NO card with a hatpin and beads is going to fit in an envelope anyway, so if you are wanting to try that cool technique, try it with a beaded hatpin! 

The sentiment was stamped on a tag from the old retired tag sheets, and tied to the top of the hatpin with ribbon. To finish it off, I added some half back pearls, also from the Pretties Kit, using glue dots, along the bottom of the card.

There you are.  Just another fun way to use the hat pins.  Try making a flag by attaching a flag to the top of the hat pin, or a golf hole holder!  There are lots of fun things you can do once you get your creative juices flowing.

I will not be doing my Technique Tuesday next week, as I will be on vacation.  I will try to get some posts up, but I won't get another tutorial staged, shot and edited before we leave.
