Happy Birthday Sketch Challenge

 

When I saw this week's sketch challenge on SCS, I immediately knew which stamp set I wanted to work with; Taylored Expressions "Branching Out"!  It seemed a natural for the sketch, and I still had lots left of the March 20 Key Ingredients kit, so I decided to bring them together again.  I think I've had too many late nights, because as I put this together last night, I couldn't get it right.  Finally I decided to let it go and take a fresh look in the morning and wouldn't you know it...I simply switched out the background paper and voila...exactly the card I envisioned appeared!

 

The card base is Papaya Puree Dark from the March 20 Key Ingredients kit, and the designer paper, ribbon and chipboard buckle are also from the kit.  I used the tree top as the circle portion of the sketch and added some buttons tied with linen thread before attaching it to the card with pop dots.  The sentiment is stamped on Frosted Teal and punched with an oval punch and is also popped up.  I pierced the perimeter of the card, since the patterns and texture of the paper made me think of a patchwork quilt!  A really fun card, and I think this could work as a birthday card for either a guy or a girl.  What do you think?

Time flies.  Tomorrow it's May...how'd that happen?  I have a funny story to tell you.  My dd's birthday is coming up, and she has made no secret she wants a cell phone.  She has one connected to mine, and that did her fine for a while, but she wants one of the cool one's like her friends, and to be able to call and text. 

So my contract was up and I got her a new fancy phone, with the cool keyboard and a new Fave 5 plan, so she can talk and text unlimited to her five fave friends.  The drawback was that in order to get the new phone working, I had to transfer the service from her old phone, so it's dead.  I told her I cancelled it, and well, I'm not her favorite people right now! 

But I can't wait until her birthday, when her present rings!!!  Oh how fun that will be, just to see her face!  The things we do for love!

A Couple of Verve Creations

 

I wanted to share a couple of Verve cards I made.  One I made last night, and the other for the release.  But since I hadn't blogged the card for the release, I thought I would tag it on here too!

 

I chose Verve's newly released "Because of You", and I could see this card in my mind.  It was loosely inspired by an add for rub ons I saw in a magazine.  However, I struggle with clean and simple. I love clean and simple....when other artists do it.  But I am not sure if I would recognize a great clean and simple card if I made it, because can't keep from adding and embellishing until it's really not so clean and simple!  That's why the pearls and ribbon are there!  I think it was probably fine without either, but I kept thinking it needed something.  Plus, I do love the way the sheer ribbon looks like a shimmery veil over the word Mom.

I won't go into so much detail here...I am off to work shortly, so I'll leave you with the recipe.

I have really been taken with the looks of white outline images I've been seeing so much of, so when I picked up this Plain Jane Elegant Flower stamp from Verve, I wanted to try it out...only with a twist.  I used White Stazon on clear cardstock, and gems to embellish. 

The card inside is Pacific Point, and it actually opens up with a side fold.  I used my Lace Doily border punch and cut out a flower stamped in Pacific Point as the focal piece on the card front.  The sentiment is from Verve's Happy Thoughts.

I think this would be such a fun card to receive!

Weekend Sketch Set; Darling Dots

 

I always feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment when I finish a sketch set!  I always feel good using my stamps, especially those that haven't seen ink yet, and this time I used a new stamp set and new papers!  Well new to me.  I chose Darling Dots, a level one hostess set, and Sweet Always papers.  I have to thank my Mom for the papers.  We usually buy then split, but this time she was the only one who bought new papers (remember I swore off more paper LOL!!), and she still split it with me!  I think she really just gave me back the papers I had drooled on anyway!

 

I happen to think Darling Dots is a happy set, and Sweet Always are happy papers, so I couldn't resist making a set of Happy Birthday cards! 

I started with Taylor's Cupcake Challenge, and if you know how much I struggle making a change to a sketch, you will know it stressed me out to bring the vertical panel forward.  But, it seems my creative brain was on break and I couldn't figure how to work these small images in while covering up a portion of the panel. 

The images were punched with a 1" circle punch and popped up on dimensionals and the flowers were finished with buttons.  I placed the Pumpkin Pie panel behind and tied the ribbon over the panel...my comprimise!  A couple of butterflies punched from the designer paper and adorned with Taylor's Tiny Twinkles finishes it off!

Next up is Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge, which was hosted by Sharon Harnist this week. 

I stamped the images, punching out the presents with the 3/4" square punch, and cutting out the cupcake.  They were adhered the image panel cut out with the Labels Four Nestability, then layered on Regal Rose.  The sketch called for a circle embellishment, so I added a layered flower with a rhinestone brad.  I pulled the sentiment from last year's SAB set, Birthday Whimsy, and secured it with another rhinestone brad. Pretty cute don't you think?

Amy's Friday Sketch kind of through me off with the long and wide image panel.  Just a little tough when you're working with small images, but I think I pulled it off.

I stamped the little presents on the Whisper White,then punched out squares of designer paper, and tied ribbon around them for fun!  They were popped up for fun, and layered on Pumpkin Pie, the a wide border of Regal Rose, and a thin border of Chocolate Chip.

The card base is Pumpkin Pie and I used two different prints of the designer paper for the card front.  Pumpkin Pie grosgrain ribbon was tied twice around as per the sketch, and this time I pulled the sentiment from "A Little Birdie Told Me", and attached a tag with linen thread.  The flower is an exact case of Amy's on this card here!  I was checking to see if she had a sample done, and found what I was looking for in another of her amazing cards!

Finally, here's my take on Jen's Sketch for you to Try.  I knew I had to have at least one blingy card...you know, for the princess in your life!

It started with the little red gems on the cherries on the cupcakes.   They seemed so perfect, that as I was putting the card together it seemed to be lacking something.  Actually, I think most cards without a little bling seem to be lacking something LOL!  I had purchased these amazing little Zva gem flourishes from Taylored Expressions after seeing Taylor work her magic with them, so I decided I had hoarded them long enough, and I love the result!  And so did my princess dd's!

The sentiment is a ribbon charm and is carefully positioned on the ribbon  under the cupcakes.  This was a really fun card to work on and I love how it turned out!

Flourishes Friday; Focus on FlowerSoft

 

It's finally Friday, and that means Flourishes Friday!  This week the focus is on Flowersoft, and you will just love seeing what you can do with this amazing dimensional embellishment!  Cindy Lawrence has a fabulous tutorial on Flourishes blog you won't want to miss, and the design team has been up to their usual creativeness, and it's all about FlowerSoft!

I have to say I'm not sure of this card.  Honestly, my Mojo has ran away on me.  I have started more projects and abandoned them simply because I am not liking the results.  This was card two for me tonight, and the one I liked best, but I'm still on the fence with it.

The stamp set is one of my go-to Flourishes set...Birds and Vine.  I find this set to be so versatile and each time I use it I love finding ways to add dimension to the floral sprays, and Flower Soft couldn't be more perfect!

The image was stamped in Versafine Onyx Black on Whisper White.  I coloured it with SU! Markers and cut it out with the SU! Top Note die, and cut the left side off to work within the sketch.  Using Tombo Multi, I dotted glue on the dots of the sprays and then sprinkled FlowerSoft liberally over top.  I pressed it in with my fingers to make sure the adhesive had a good hold on it, and then tapped off the excess.  Pretty isn't it?

I followed CPS Sketch 111, adding four squares of Pale Plum which had been run through the Script Cuttlebug folder.  The card base is Pale Plum, then a layer of white and the designer paper is from the Euphoria line by Basic Grey.  The ribbon rose was one of about 5 that I did last week when Flourishes Friday was all about Ribbon.  I used the May Arts, lavender 3/8" satin ribbon, and it's so beautiful, I had to put it into play!  By the way, so many people have asked about the ribbon rose, here is a tutorial by fellow DT member Christine Okken, and here is a site I found with written and visual instructions.  They are super easy to do, so go crazy folks!  I want to see tons of ribbon roses now!

Sketch Challenge Thank You

 

I haven't done a SCS Sketch challenge in forever, so I was kind of happy to find some time this week, because it's been a bit crazy on my side of the computer.  Taylored Expressions "Fresh Flowers" was my stamp choice and of course I had to use more of the Mother's Day Key Ingredients kit.

I started with a base of Island Mist from the Key Ingredients kit, and pieced the sketch together using scraps of designer paper from the kit.

I stamped the flower in the pitcher on Choice Buttercream and coloured it with a combination of markers and ink and an aquapainter.  The flower itself was stamped again, coloured and cut out, and I added Crystal Effects to give it some pop, along with a centre of Flower Soft.

The sentiment was stamped along side the image to keep the flow of the card right, and I tied some of the gorgeous satin ribbon from the Key Ingredients kit through a slot in the image panel.  Finally, I added three gems to the top right to balance it off and I love the soft sweet look of this card.

Trendy Trees Weekend Sketch Set

 

WOW, it seems like forever since I had a chance to do a Weekend Sketch Set, but I made sure I did at least that stamping with my Mom this weekend.  I chose Trendy Trees, a set that I've had for months now, and used it for the first time.  I might have picked another set had I been at  home, but it was the only one I took with me, because I wanted to get inky!  It was a bit of a challenge, since the images in the set are small given the way the sketch sets turned out this weekend, but that pushed me a bit creatively, and I think in the end they turned out pretty nice.

I took a few of my new goodies down to show my Mom, and one of them was the Mother's Day Key Ingredients kit, from Taylored Expressions, so I decided to work with it for my designer paper choices.  I had to show her my new EK punch, and a few other little toys I picked up along the way!  It was really fun making them all work together.

Here is my take on Taylor's Cupcake Challenge.  I stamped three trees to fill up the space better, and then I took a section of the designer paper from the Mother's Day Key Ingredients kit, and used it to ground the image.  I love the way it looks like the trees are lined up along a river bank!  The images get slightly larger if you click on them.

I used my EK wavy border punch and added some satin ribbon from the kit and one of the tree tops from the stamp set is circle punched to back the sentiment.  I pierced around the outer edge and that was that!

For Amy's Friday Sketch I chose the long narrow trees, stamping them twice, once on a scrap then popping up the cut out image to add a little interest. 

The left side panel was punched with the curly label punch and I added three brads instead of the sentiment which I used to fill up the longer image panel.  The sentiment is from Always in my Thoughts, a set my Mom has, that has some fabulous small sentiments, which are all I ever leave space for LOL!

I finished it off with ribbon from the Key Ingredients kit, and some gems on each of the scallops.

  Lori Craig hosted the Weekend Sketch Challenge this week, and to fill up the large image panel, I stamped all four trees.  I didn't get them very even, so I took a scrap of designer paper and cut it to be my "hilly" ground!  From awful to perfect don't you think?

I tied wide satin ribbon from the Mother's Day Key Ingredients kit along the top, and secured the sentiment with a fancy brad. 

This card was so quick and simple, I sat for a while wondering what else I could add, then decided it was perfect as is!

And finally, here is my take on Jen's Sketch for You to try.  My colours were Baja Breeze, Kiwi Kiss and Ruby Red.  I pieced the card together as per the sketch.  The image was stamped in Kiwi Kiss then thumped with my Ruby Red marker to add some interest.  I decided the knot in the Kiwi Kiss ribbon would work for the left hand embellishment, and since it seemed to need something to the right to balance, I added some Riding Hood Red taffeta ribbon with a square spiral clip.

I'm a happy girl getting another set done, and inking up a stamp set for the first time.  I love these colours, and I think the darker ones would work great for masculine cards...a fun spin on the Mother's Day Key Ingredients kit!

Flourishes Friday; Ribbon and Roses

 

Ackkk!  When things go wrong!  I have three sets of rechargeable batteries for my camera, so I'm never short on batteries.  But when I went to Disney, I took all three sets, and used them all.  Of course when I got home the last thing on my mind was to go charge all the batteries, and guess what?  Yup, the ones in my camera depleted themselves and I had no charged batteries!  So I ended up putting a set in for about an hour (mine needs 8hrs to charge them fully), just so I could get my post up.  I hope that doesn't wreck my batteries.  Note to self...buy one of the quick charge sets!!

Anyway, here is my card finally!  Our focus this week is on ribbon tying, and I knew I had to try the ribbon rose I learned at the Edmonton Regionals again. 

My order from Flourishes arrived so I just had to get out all my new goodies and play with them.  I decided I would watercolour with Twinkling H20's again and try out the new European watercolour paper Flourishes is carrying.  Oh, and it's wonderful to work with!  I chose Pirouette Pink for my card base and the designer paper is from Basic Grey's "Porcelain" line.

I picked up I Love Roses, which is one of my favorites sets.  I just love this rose and I curved the stem on the block to give it a more realistic look.

I thought using the scalloped ribbon might be an interesting twist on the ribbon rose, so I went with May Arts light pink scalloped ribbon.  I love the look...just that bit of softness where it's scallops makes it look so delicate!  The banner photo shows it better. 

I finished the card by adding a sentiment from Sweet Violets and three Kaiser half back pearls on the ribbon and below the sentiment.

Verve Preview: Because of You

 

Oh, I've been a bad blogger!  Gone 5 days, and I feel like I have 50 to catch up on LOL!  I've had a tough time getting back on a schedule, but today, I have something fun to share!  A peek at one of the new sets being released by Verve on Friday.  Oh, and I guarantee you're going to love it!

One of the things you've come to expect from Verve is fabulous sentiments, and this set is just over the top for sentiments!  Not to mention gorgeous images and beautiful fonts!  I can see this set as a must have and it will surely become your "go-to" set for cards for all the women in your life.

I love cards where sentiments are the focus of the card, so I chose the title sentiment from "Because of You" for this one, and framed it with the beautiful floral stamp top and bottom!  I stamped the sentiment again on Regal Rose and Old Olive and pieced some of the key words to really make the sentiment pop. I added a strip of designer paper, layered on a scalloped border of Regal Rose and tied a length of Old Olive grosgrain to balance out the colours.  Some Crystal Stickles added to the blossoms add a little shimmer to finish it off.

Disney Divas!

 

Well, I have to tell you I had a fabulous time at Disneyland!  It was a quick whirlwind trip, with three days in a row at Disney and California Adventure park, then one day at Universal Studios, and we were dead tired every night.  I rode more rides in those three days than I have in the past 20 years!  Some I loved...Soaring over California and the Indiana Jones rides were both amazing.  I'm glad I did the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and the California Screamer...but you'll never catch me on them again.  I'll just be happy to say I've been there and done that!  I did a little shopping, but not a lot.  We didn't want to carry anything during the day, and at night we were just too tired to fight the crowds in the shops.

I did pick up a few trinkets and souvenirs.  In fact a friend of mine said just before I left that she likes mint tins.  I found that kind of interesting because I collect tins so I am always looking for a tin as my souvenir, and lo and behold as I stood in line to pay for my Mickey Mouse shirt, at the front of the register were mint tins.  Perfect!  I couldn't wait to get home to wrap it up!

I was definitely going to work with a Disney theme for the packaging, and when the idea hit me, I giggled and smiled right up until it was done!  I pulled out Downtown Divas by Taylored Expressions, and dressed my cuppies in traditional Disney colours and attire!  Aren't they just darling in their mouse hats??  Honestly, they have the cutest "Princess" mouse hats now, with little veils trailing behind them and a blingy crown on the front.  All the little girls were wearing them, but my girls wouldn't go near them LOL!

The little box is one of Taylored Expressions "Window Boxes" in Classic Red by Prism.  I stamped the Diva Cuppies on Choice Buttercream and then paper pieced their bottoms in polka dots.  Since I didn't really have black and white polka dots I made my own with black paper and a white gel pen.  Their mouse hats are made with circle punches...and I love how they look!  I stamped the image again on Classic Red and cut the heart out and popped it up, just to add a little dimension.

Around the edge of the oval, I dotted Gunmetal Stickles, and I wish I could have got them a little more consistent.  I think I need lessons from Faith in dot application!  The corners of the box were stamped with the flourished flower from Downtown Divas, and I also stamped them on Choice Buttercream.  I cut the flower out of the Choice Buttercream and popped it up over the red, and added a red Twinkle from Taylor's Tiny Twinkles.  They are so perfect when you need tiny gems!  I was really into sparkle so I added Crystal Stickles to the flourishes to finish them.  Finally, I tied a cheater bow in black and white polka dot organdy, and attached the bow to the top corner with a glue dot.

So fun and so cute!  Now those mints are looking like a million bucks don't you think?

Sorry I don't have a weekend sketch set.  I got scheduled to work both Friday and Saturday, so there was no time between work and laundry to get much stamping in.  I'll be back in the swing of things this week though!

Flourishes Release Day!

 

It's release day at Flourishes, and soon all of the Swing into Spring sets will be available!  I hope you are planning to attend the release party this evening!  You will find us in the Flourishes Member Forum on Splitcoast Stampers at 8:00 Central.  You'll be pleasantly surprised when the rest of the design team previews Vintage Wallpaper, a brand new background stamp that is a must see.  It didn't make it to me so instead I'm sharing another card with Sweet Violets. 

I have to say that as much as I love this card, I think I have to credit Latisha and Stacy for their influence on it.  Latisha for the big bow, and Stacy for the classy white designs she works her magic with.

I stamped the image in Versafine Onyx Black and coloured it with SU! markers.  I added a tiny dot of Crystal Stickles to the centre of the flowers, after cutting them with Nestabilities.

The card base is PTI white and I ran it through the Cuttlebug with the Swiss Dots folder running across the centre of the card only.  The sentiment was stamped on the lower right and the gorgeous sheer organdy lavender ribbon is tied in a bow to finish.
